Salt Satyagraha

A movement spearheaded by Mohandas Gandhi to dramatize the unjust nature of the British Empire, especially its monopoly on Indian salt. One of the most well known nonviolent campaigns in history, it included the Great Salt March to Dandi in 1930.

Sanctuary Movement

Made up of socially minded members of various Christian and Jewish denominations, the Sanctuary Movement since the early 1980s has provided safe-haven in the United States for Central American refugees fleeing unrest in their countries of origin.

Serbia's Bulldozer Revolution

A growing series of very strategically executed nonviolent campaigns and demonstrations, organized in large part by the Serbian student group Otpor. In a very short amount of time this movement was successful at removing from power the entrenched Yugoslav dictator Slobodan Milosevic.

Tunisia's Jasmine Revolution

The 2011 Jasmine Revolution, a call for political and economic reform in Tunisia, brought down the dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, at that point in power for 23 years. Sparking a wave of Arab democracy campaigns, Tunisia's revolution inspired protesters in and around the Middle East including Egypt, Bahrain, Syria, and Yemen.

Ukraine's Orange Revolution

2004's Orange Revolution took place after a disputed election in Ukraine where the ruling party was widely seen to have manipulated results. People took to the streets en masse, donning the color of the opposition leader's campaign, and within two months had their rightful president in office.

Zimbabwe Arms Shipment Blockade

South Africans, and later groups in other coastal Southeast African nations, coordinated to prevent the offloading and transfer of arms from China's An Yue Jiang container ship to Robert Mugabe’s Defense Force in Zimbabwe.
